Catching Up with The Skulls

5 Jan

A few years ago we featured the talented photographer and motorcycle loving Ryan Pavlovich back when he called Grand Rapids, MI home. Now, he and his wife Jilian Dee live in L.A. with 3 kids in tow. The two are known as the photography/directing duo called The Skulls. When they’re not shooting for musicians and lifestyle brands, they’re heading up and down the highway looking for whatever adventures the road throws at them.

Here’s a look at their work:

Our interview with the talented Ryan Pavlovich of TheSkulls.co :

When was the move to LA, and how has that changed your personal and creative life?

Ryan Pavlovich: So we decided to pack up and move to LA about three years ago already (man time flies) Threw what we could into the back of a vw golf pulling a little 5×8 trailer with a motorcycle in the middle (of course) and hit the road.

Personally I was in need of a massive life overhaul after hitting a creative wall. Jilian and I decided that we were both ready for the change and decided to not only move out here, but that we were going to team up with our photography as well. We had started shooting a few commercial jobs here and there together and the dynamic worked really well. Somehow we could work all day together, head home and still not want to kill each other or any of our kids. Not only that but it got us both excited to push each other to shoot differently and expand our styles.

Are you riding more now?

RP:  These days the motorcycle doesn’t really get out quite as much as it once did, but you’ll still find me on a bike as much as I can be for sure. With our youngest being born, and oldest getting run to school and such, living the 21 year old lifestyle isn’t really doable as most people with kids would agree I’m sure.

You and your wife are both creatives and you have 3 kids, how do you balance your work and family life?

RP: Yes we do have three amazing kids. Two live with us full time as we are a “blended” family but balance is certainly the key word; at least as much as possible. Jilian and I do our best to push the photography, as well as run her children’s clothing line (littlescollection.com) and still be able to maintain a healthy relationship together and with our kids. We are finding that scheduling our time as much as possible, and really being a great team has been key. That and we talk about everything all the time which keeps everything in line as well.

Are you each usually involved in every shoot, or do you each do your own thing? How do you break down the business responsibilities?

RP: Yes we are both usually involved in every shoot, unless something comes up where we just can’t make it happen but overall if you’re dealing with The Skulls you’re dealing with both of us. I manage the day to day for the most part, but we both are equally involved in every part, and we both shoot together as well. It goes back to that balance.

Do you guys have any other businesses or projects we should know about or want to plug?Does those or other passive income help you pick and choose your projects differently?

DM: We do have a couple other things going (what creative doesn’t) Jilian has an amazing children’s clothing company (littlescollection.com) and I just started making rings for the hell of it.  Aside from that I’m always game to work on anyones motorcycle any time. I wouldn’t say that these help us pick and choose what projects we take on, but we do know what projects we will fit and which ones won’t.

Any fun recent adventures or shoots?

RP: Everyday is an adventure for us, but lately we’ve been hanging around the house working on marketing, cold calls, and brainstorming some new personal shoot concepts that we are getting really excited to shoot soon.

What’s next for The Skulls?

RP: Next up for The Skulls, is shooting more, doing a slight re-brand of the website, eating as much amazing new food as we can try, and we both really want to learn how to surf.
